David Williams, a resident of Cherokee County, Georgia for 34 years, is the owner of SCF Solutions and the inventor of the patent-pending Brella Fence Post Caps.
On average, fencing companies charge about $100 to replace a single 4×6 post used on board fencing. After years of constant maintenance replacing pressure-treated 4×6 posts used on my board fencing due to pre-mature wood rot, I decided to tackle the “top” of the problem.
That lead to the creation of Brella fence post caps, a patent-pending product made locally in the USA, to maximize the lifetime of wood fence posts by protecting them from the elements.
Brella is the only product on the market today designed specifically for fence posts having an angled or sloped top cut.
Why I created the Patent-Pending Brella Fence Post Topper
The Problem
Nine years ago, I installed board horse fencing on my property. Since that time, I have personally replaced 60 fence posts due to extensive wood rot on the top surface. On average, fencing companies charge about $100 to replace a single 4×6 post used on board fencing, so the cost of maintaining a board fence adds up over time.
I thought I was being proactive with fence maintenance by doing all the right things. I painted the fence when new, four years after installation, and then again in 2024. In all cases, I used a high quality black acrylic lacquer. Thus, I can confirm the extensive wood rot is not attributed to poor maintenance.

The Solution
I realized that applying paint or other commercially available surface treatment products on the top surface were only band-aid solutions which needed to be performed on a regular basis. The ultimate solution was to simply mitigate water from making contact with the fence post top. Since I couldn’t find a solution on the market for fence posts with an angled or sloped top cut, I put my engineering background to work and created the patent-pending Brella Fence Post Topper.
